Israel has instructed local authorities in the Israeli-held Golan Heights to “unlock and ready bomb shelters” after identifying what the military described as “irregular activity of Iranian forces in Syria”.

The military statement further said that its defence systems had been deployed “and IDF (Israel Defence Force) troops are on high alert for an attack”.

Reports have emerged of explosions being heard south of the Syrian capital of Damascus towards the Israeli border.

Authorities have not confirmed the source of the blast sounds, but it is understood the Syria’s air defence is in action.

Hadi Albahra, president of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, tweeted: “Explosions south of Damascus. Air defence in action in Syria.”

Meanwhile a commander in the regional alliance supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Reuters that an Israeli air strike targeted a Syrian army position in the Kisweh area south of Damascus on Tuesday but caused no casualties, .

Syrian state news agency SANA had reported the sound of explosions near Kisweh and said Syrian air defences fired at and destroyed two Israeli missiles in the Kisweh area.

Israel’s iron dome systems deployment comes as the country’s defence minister praised Donald Trump’s announcement today that the US will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.

The minister called President Trump’s decision an example of “brave leadership” that will bring down the Iranian regime.

His words were echoed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who said President Trump took a brave and correct decision to cancel the nuclear deal with Iran, which was “a recipe for disaster”.

He added: ”Israel thinks that President Trump made an historic move, and this is why Israel thanks President Trump for his courageous leadership, his commitment to confront the terrorist regime in Tehran, and his commitment to ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, not today, not in a decade, not ever.”

The Israeli leader, who has called for the deal between Western powers and Iran to be fixed or cancelled, spoke moments after the US President announced his decision in a speech at the White House.
