More than 100 frustrated homeowners packed into Pahoa High School’s cafeteria on Monday night to quiz county, state and federal authorities on their response to the disaster.

They slammed officials for leaving them in the dark, with one resident warning “rumours and fear are spreading”.

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted on Thursday, blasting a massive plume of ash into the sky and prompting mass evacuations.

Twelve new fissures have since been reported in the Leilani Estates area, north of Pahoa and lava has been seen engulfing roads and cars and heading towards people’s homes.

Shocking footage from Big Island shows bright orange lava bubbling from the cracks in a phenomenon officials have dubbed “active volcanic fountaining”.

So far 35 structures, at least 26 of which were houses, have been destroyed by the eruption as searing hot lava crept into towns and villages.

Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated, including those in Leilani Estates, as a stream of molten rock approached their homes.

But some have grown frustrated with what they say is a lack of updates.

Desperate residents last night vented their anger over not being kept up to date on what actions are being taken to protect their homes and what dangers remain, Fox News reported.

At last night’s meeting, one angry resident said: “Don’t tell us to sit in a shelter.

“Tell us what is going on. Rumours and fear are spreading. What is going on? Someone tell us something.”
