Human T-cell leukaemia virus Type 1, or HTLV-1, is rapidly spreading with doctors fearing an outbreak.

The virus, first discovered 40 years ago, has shocked doctors in how little has been done to stop the spread.

Dr Robert Gallo, co-founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland, said: “The prevalence is off the charts.”

He added: “nobody that I know of in the world has done anything about trying to treat this disease before.”

HTLV-1 has been found in 1,500-year-old mummies from South America and can be spread by sex.

The virus is spread through unprotected sex, through blood contact and breastfeeding.

Mums and their children, and sexual partners are most at risk.

The virus can cause leukaemia and lymphoma, as well as diseases attacking the nervous system, lung damage and weakens the immune system.

HTLV-1 is sometimes described as a “cousin” of HIV.
