ISRAEL would rather face Iran in a war “now than later” despite not being interested in a military escalation with Tehran, said President Benjamin Netanyahu has warned, amid growing tensions in the Middle East.

The chilling announcement follows last week’s claim made by Mr Netanyahu, which stirred relations with Tehran when he presented what he said were documents proving that the country entered the Iran deal while developing nuclear weapons.

The Israeli president said: “We are determined to block Iran’s aggression against us even if this means a struggle.

“Better now than later.

“Nations that were unprepared to take timely action to counter murderous aggression against them paid much heavier prices afterwards.

“We do not want escalation, but we are prepared for any scenario.”

His words comes days before US President Donald Trump is set to announce whether his country will remain within the Iran nuclear deal or will withdraw, as hoped by Mr Netanyahu.

As Israel urged Washington to abandon the “fatally flawed” agreement, Iran warned the US against it.

Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s president, said: “If the United States leaves the nuclear agreement, you will soon see that they will regret it like never before in history.

“Trump must know that our people are united, the Zionist regime (Israel) must know that our people are united.”
