HAWAII’s volcano Mount Kilauea continues to spew molten-hot lava nearly 24 hours since its eruption with volcanologist Dr Janine Krippner warning properties located in the path of the oncoming boiling magma are at risk of being flooded by molten lava.

Hawaii volcano Kilauea has been spouting lava into residential areas for over a day forcing locals to evacuate to escape rivers of molten-hot magma.

With five active volcanoes in Hawaii, locals are used to volcanic activity but the scale of Mount Kilauea’s eruption has caused distress

Volcanologist Dr Janine Krippner warned the worst might not be over for Hawaii residents as their properties could still be targeted by an “inundation of lava”.

Speaking to Sky News, Dr Krippner said: “Unfortunately, fissures have opened up right inside areas where people are living.

“The biggest risk right now is inundation of lava of people’s homes which is very sad for people living in that area.”

Since the eruption Hawaii’s Big Island has been targeted by a series of earthquakes, including a 6.9 tremor earlier this morning.

According to the US Geological Survey, lava flows from Mount Kilauea have covered 48 squares miles of the island.

But Dr Krippner also said that in addition to the property damage, clouds of sulphur dioxide spewing from the erupting volcano could threaten the health of islanders.

Sulphur dioxide can be released by eruptions and can be life-threatening if consumed in high levels.

She continued: “The gases can cause quite a bit of respiratory distress as well as irritation of the eyes especially if people already have respiratory issues like asthma.”

The USGS declared that “extremely high levels of dangerous sulphur dioxide gas” had been detected in evacuation areas after the volcanic eruptions on the island.

Authorities say the high levels of sulphur gas could threaten the elderly, young children and people with breathing problems.

Exposure to high levels of sulfur dioxide can be life-threatening, according to the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

Sulfur dioxide ingetsion can result in burning of the nose and throat and breathing difficulties.
