THE DEFCON Warning System has issued a cautious update following a pledge by Kim Jong-un to shut North Korea’s main nuclear test site, but warned the rogue state is working to repair or expand the facility – not close it.

The private intelligence DEFCON group warned Kim Jong-un’s Punggye-ri site is still viable for testing, and the hermit state has broken promises to denuclearise in the past.

Its latest update also highlights tensions over disputed territory in the South China Sea as well as the prospect of conflict between Iran and Israel in the Middle East.

The DEFCON Warning System monitors nuclear threats against the United States and its update for May remains at Level 5, the lowest level, which indicates there are no imminent threats.

Recent talks between North and South Korea saw Kim Jong-un commit to closing his main nuclear test site at Punggye-ri.

The facility in the north of the hermit kingdom has been used for several subterranean detonations.

The complex of test tunnels is buried deep underground and had reportedly been severely damaged after part of it collapsed in October 2017.

But the DEFCON Warning System, which boasts contacts within the US Government and military agencies, warned North Korea may not be keeping its word.

DEFCON said: “It also should be noted that despite claims by some, the nuclear test site remains viable for future testing and North Korea has continued to do work at the site to repair and/or expand it.

“However, there has been no observed testing at the site.

“While many praise the gestures made by North and South Korea, observers caution that such promises by North Korea have been made in the past, only to be broken.

“For the time being, however, the threat of conflict in the region is quite low.”

Tensions in the South China Sea could also boil over in the future as Beijing continues to fortify its territory in the Spratly Islands, the latest DEFCON update warned.
