VOLCANOES in Africa are cracking the continent in two and are opening up the ‘gateway to Hell’ in Ethiopia, NASA satellite imagery has revealed.

Three tectonic plates are believed to be slowly moving away from each other, opening holes and exposing large swathes of magma.

The most significant crack appeared near to the Erta Ale volcano – known by locals as the ‘Gateway To Hell’.

The site is part of the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia and sits just 613 metres above sea level.

Erta Ale is one of just five known volcanoes that has molten lava lakes.

It is located in a spot where three plates are very slowly moving apart at an unnoticeable rate each each year as the continents of Africa and Asia drift away from each other.

Lava now exposed by the fissure is emitting temperatures up to 1,100 degrees Celsius (2,012 degrees Fahrenheit).

A statement from the NASA Earth Observatory read: “In Africa’s Danakil (or Afar) Depression three tectonic plates are tearing themselves apart in spectacular fashion.

“As the plates separate, several active volcanoes have emerged along the seams. One of the most active is Erta Ale, a shield volcano near the Ethiopian and Eritrean border.
