Ten people are dead and 15 are injured after a white rental van mowed down pedestrians in Toronto.

Witnesses say the van mounted the curb on Yonge Street near Finch Ave in Toronto just before 1.30pm on Monday afternoon.

The acting Toronto police chief confirmed that 10 had been killed and that the suspect was in custody after the tragedy.

Police said 25-year-old Alek Minassian, of Richmond Hill, was arrested over the attack.

Police would not confirm if the incident was a deliberate attack but witnesses say the driver seemed to be targeting pedestrians.

‘This person was intentionally doing this, he was killing everybody,’ a witness at the scene, who only gave his name as Ali, said. ‘He kept going, he kept going. People were getting hit, one after another.’

He added that many of the victims had been elderly while he saw a stroller fly into the air. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre confirmed it has received seven patients from the scene.

The rental van fled the scene after striking the pedestrians. Cops were able to stop the driver a few blocks away.

Footage from the scene showed the suspect, named as Minassian by local news, pointing what appeared to be a gun at police before he was ordered to drop, and was arrested. He was taken into custody a few yards from a large white Ryder van which has serious damage to the front of the vehicle.

Another man, who appeared to have damage to his car, has also been arrested on Yonge St. although it’s unclear if he’s tied to the initial incident.

Witnesses were shocked by the bloody scene in front of them.

‘It was just so many bodies,’ said Carol Roberts, who said she saw ‘a lot of people lying lifeless on the ground.’

A reporter at the scene described a gory scene of bodies strewn ‘all over Yonge St.’
