RUSSIAN businessmen who fled to London from Vladimir Putin’s state have applied to return home as Britain steps up a crackdown on McMafia-style dodgy money.

All of the figures, up to 30 in total, claim they were victims of political pressure or prosecutions when they arrived in exile in London.

Now at least one has already returned, and dozens more have applied, with the prospect of legal action against them in Russia being dropped.

But there are also claims they will be expected to hand over discreet £7million payments to wipe the slate clean.

The Novichok attack on ex-spy Sergei Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33, in Salisbury, along with the suspected murder of Nikolai Glushkov is said to have “unnerved” some exiled Russians living in “Londongrad”.

Others are concerned over British threats to crackdown on Russian money in London with the prospect of intrusive investigations into whether wealth is legitimate.

Putin’s business ombudsman Boris Titov said: “34 appeals from entrepreneurs living abroad are being examined at the present moment.”

The bulk are now exiled in Britain.

Titov said: “New people are appearing including from London, asking for our protection. Unfortunately, the situation is aggravating there.”
