Four vessels have been taking part in the drills near to the coast of Latvia – a NATO member – in the Baltic Sea.

War games involved launching missiles and firing live ammunition in what was described by Putin’s defence ministry as a “demonstrate of force”.

Russia however also described the drills as “routine” as tensions stretch to breaking point with the west over the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal.

MI6 double agent Skripal was found slumped alongside his daughter Yulia after being poisoned with military grade nerve agent Novichok in Salisbury.

The Kremlin has remained defiant over accusations it was behind the poisoning, yesterday warning Britain not to “play with fire”.

Three corvettes and a frigate led the drill and practiced hitting air and a sea targets along with hunting enemy submarines.

The drills are taking place between Sweden, Poland and Latvia – and are relatively close to the naval base in the Swedish city of Karlskrona.

Sweden last week described the drills as “very rare” and Latvia yesterday said the war games were “hard to comprehend”.

Riga closed off its airspace around the drills, while Stockholm issued warnings to sea and air traffic.
