Right-winger Mr Orban, a fierce critic of the Brussels bloc, is widely expected to win a new four-year term in Hungary’s elections on Sunday.

His campaign for a third consecutive term as the country’s Prime Minister has been underpinned by a nationalist and anti-migration message.

His likely win would send shockwaves through Brussels as EU chiefs try to stem the tide of Eurosceptic sentiment across the bloc.

Mr Orban’s party, Fidesz, has an absolute majority of 114 out of 199 MPs in the Hungarian Parliament – almost a two-thirds majority.

In Sunday’s election, the party could strengthen its majority, giving Mr Orban an ever stronger mandate to challenge the European Union.

However, critics have accused the 54-year-old of adopting similar policies to the far-right by ramping up his anti-immigration stance.

They also argue he has a frayed Hungary’s democratic fabric by undermining freedom of speech.

In speech last week, the Fidesz leader launched a strongly worded attack on Brussels’ response to the refugee crisis.
