THE EUROPEAN Union is set to face a collapse on a similar scale to the Soviet Union, a well respected academic from the London School of Economics has predicted according to reports.

Gwythian Prins has warned the elite trade bloc will crumble within a generation because it has become too big, sighting Brexit as proof of its decline.

The Professor has described how anti-EU sentiment is rising across the continent as voters become increasingly frustrated with the actions of the supranational body.

He said: “The EU ‘project’ is 61 years old this month.

“Absence of cultural reproduction suggests that, like its older sibling (the Soviet Union), it should not expect to outlast a human lifespan.

“Since the turn of the century things have been steadily falling apart.”

Since the UK voted for Brexit in June 2016, a number of other EU states have demanded reform to the trade bloc, threatening to otherwise follow in the UK’s footsteps.

In 2017 France nearly elected the Eurosceptic Marine Le Pen as President, Austria gave power to a party which is demanding change to the way Brussels operates, and Germany saw a rise in support for anti-EU politicians.

Just weeks ago Italy also gave a mandate to the Five Star Movement, who have threatened to pull the country out of the EU, in their general election.

Professor Prins added: “The ‘project’ drives forward ever more relentlessly; and in reaction the people become ever more disaffected, making it necessary to impose more instruments of control more stringently.

“Gains have become increasingly pyrrhic because of the cost in social alienation.”

He added Brussels bureaucrats have become greedy and power hungry and no longer represent the interests of the people they are meant to represent.

After the Brexit vote, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced the European project was to continue full steam ahead by announcing plans to create an EU army.

However, there is little support for such a move.

Professor Prins said: “All this evidence of citizen rejection while the ‘project’ responds with further acceleration has plainly taken the EU into the Zone of Risk of Collapse.
