Facebook users across the globe appear to be turning their backs on the social media giant.

With the hashtag DeleteFacebook currently trending on Twitter it seems thousands of Facebook fans are furious after it was discovered that some 50 million profiles had been harvested for data.

A whistleblower claims Cambridge Analytica used personal data, taken without authorisation in 2014, to profile individual US voters and target them with political advertisements.

Cambridge Analytica allegedly obtained data gathered through an app called thisisyourdigitallife. Hundreds of thousands of users were paid to take a personality test and agreed to academic use of the data.

But the app also allegedly collected their Facebook friends’ data, creating an unprecedented cache of private information.

UK Digital and Culture Secretary Matt Hancock told the Commons the allegations were “very worrying”.

“Canvassing someone’s voting intentions is as old as democracy itself,” he said. “But it is important the public is comfortable with how information is gathered, used and shared in modern political campaigns.”

Legislation now going through Parliament already proposed to give the Information Commissioner new powers, he said.

As the seriousness of the issue becomes clear Twitter is now full of Facebook users saying they have now closed their accounts with one tweeting, “So glad I’ve deleted Facebook.”

Another added, “I am gonna do it as soon as I get home. Its just not worth it anymore.”

To make matters worse for the popular network its shares plummeted by more than six percent since the scandal was announced slashing over $30 billion from the company’s valuation.
