The military exercise – Arctic Edge 2018 – was carried out in the bitterly-cold US state in the hopes it could give them an edge over winter-ready combatants.

During the drills hundreds of troops and military vehicles were seen carrying out carefully-planned

It is believed the drills lasted up to five weeks and were carried out in remote locations.

The director of the operations, who was not named in the report, said: “It’s a chance for us to get up here in these extreme conditions and conduct training to make sure the equipment is working, and we are keeping those skill sets sharp.”

It comes as UK Navy chiefs sent one of its submarines to the Arctic in a defiant show of force to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “The ability of our submarines to operate with our US allies here demonstrates the Royal Navy is always here on hand and ready to defend our nation anywhere in the world from the most severe threats no matter the conditions.”

The huge military response comes as UK-Russia relations plunged to an all-time low.
