The helicopter, which was carrying seven people on board, is believed to have crashed in the Anbar region of Iraq.

Emergency services and rescue teams are on their way to the helicopter, a HH-60 Blac Hawk, according to CNN.

US defence officials said the Pave Hawk was not on a combat mission.

It is unclear how seriously injured the personnel are.

Officials are also understood to have said that early reports do not indicate hostile fire.

US Central Command said: “A US military aircraft has crashed in western Iraq with US service members aboard.

“Rescue teams are responding to the scene of the downed aircraft at this time.

“Further details will be released when available. An investigation will be initiated to determine the cause of the incident.”

The US is currently leading a coalition, dubbed Operation Inherent Resolve, fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Officials said: “We are aware of reports of an incident involving a Coalition aircraft in the vicinity of Al Qaim, Iraq March 15, 2018.

“We are currently gathering the facts and coordinating with the appropriate national authorities. We will issue a statement at the appropriate time, but have nothing further to offer at the moment.”
