Theresa May confirmed the expulsion of 23 high-level diplomat during an address to the House of Commons.

She announced her decision in the wake of last week’s “barbaric” nerve agent attack on former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia.

Mrs May said: “Under the Vienna Convention, the United Kingdom will now expel 23 Russian diplomats who have been identified as undeclared intelligence officers.”They have just one week to leave.”

The PM said it marked the “single biggest expulsion in 30 years” after the diplomats were identified as undeclared intelligence officials.

In response, a Russian politician said he could not rule out expelling 23 – or more – British diplomats from Russia.

And Russian embassy in Britainsaid: “We consider this hostile action as totally unacceptable, unjustified and shortsighted.

“All the responsibility for the deterioration of the Russia-UK relationship lies with the current political leadership of Britain.”

As well as this, diplomatic relations between the two states will be cut back with invitations for foreign visits withdrawn.

Mrs May said Russia has reponded with “contempt and defiance” to the spiralling crisis and demonstrated “complete disdain” for th gravity of the situation.

As well as this, no government officials or members of the Royal Family will attend this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Mrs May said it was clear Russia was at worst directly responsible or at worst criminally negligent for its role in the attack.
