The 17-year-old boy killed in one of three package bomb explosions in Austin has been identified as investigators desperately search for the person responsible and try to determine a motive for the attacks.

The three parcel explosions that have rocked Austin in a 10-day time frame – two on Monday and one on March 2 – have left two males dead and seriously injured two women.

Draylen Mason was the teenager killed in the first of Monday’s blasts when a package left outside his home was carried into the kitchen and exploded when it was opened.

A 40-year-old woman was gravely injured in that bombing.

Mason, an honor roll student and musician, is the grandson of prominent members of Austin’s African American community.

His grandfather Norman Mason is a dentist who has mentored black students at the University of Texas at Austin and his grandmother LaVonne Mason is co-founder of the Austin Area Urban League.

Hours after Mason was killed, authorities were called to the scene of another explosion also triggered by the opening of a package.

That blast wounded a 75-year-old Hispanic woman, identified by family as Esperanza Herrera, who was rushed to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Police say the two attacks on Monday are linked to a deadly parcel bombing in a nearby neighborhood on March 2 that killed 39-year-old Anthony Stephan House.
