JACOB Rees-Mogg has made it clear the European Union or the UK government should not be telling member states and citizens how to act, but that the “priority of the government should be to help people lead their lives”.

Mr Rees-Mogg has said that the role of the state should be to enable people to make their own choices.
Speaking in an interview with Politico, the leading Tory Brexiteer said: “I think the priority for the government should be to help people lead the lives they want to lead, rather than telling them how they ought to live their lives.”
During the interview, he said he was a free-market economic liberal and is a fan of the former PM Benjamin Disraeli who “actually thought about things which make people’s lives better”.
He accepted that making people’s lives better requires “some use of the powers that the government has and that is perfectly reasonable”.
He said: “Conservatism is all about changing the things which need to be changed but not the things which don’t.
“There’s no point in hanging on to things which begin to do harm and cause problems.”
The Tory backbencher said earlier this month that he hoped the Prime Minister’s message about the UK leaving the single market would end any speculation in Brussels that Brexit would not go ahead.
He said: “The soft line is that we are offering them this huge amount of money and in return we want a trade deal.
