Unstable air wedged over the UK will trigger violent, stormy eruptions, lighting strikes and further snow deluges.

Ground temperatures are expected to stay largely at or below freezing across England, Scotland and Wales.

However bitter, hurricane-force winds will bring a windchill of -18C (-0.4F) to Scotland and the north with even the far south ‘feeling like’ -10C (14F).

Parts of the southwest could creep above freezing thanks to mild Atlantic air dragged in by Emma although with the winds it will feel much colder, meteorologists warn.

The dry nature of air roaring in from Siberia causes water to evaporate rapidly from the body making the body feel much colder than ‘real’ temperatures suggest.

Emma was poised to tear into the southwest last night with much of southern Britain on alert for disruption through today.

The Met Office forecasts winds of up to 80mph in parts of the country with the storm forecast to rage into this evening.

Warnings are in place for heavy snow across northern and central England with further wintry showers possible across the south.

Numbing winds blowing over frozen snow will bring some of the lowest feel-like temperatures the UK has seen for years.

Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gundersen said: “Strong winds will continue to lead to drifting of snow, and severe wind chill, while lightning could be an additional hazard, particularly near coasts.

“Although snow showers across northern England will ease somewhat with time, continued blowing and drifting of lying snow is likely.

“This warning has been updated to extend the validity period into Friday morning as well as to extend the area further south across more of northern England.”

Forecasters have warned torrential rain will freeze as it falls through a layer of sub-zero air bringing freezing rain.
