New Jersey police arrested a 10-year-old boy on Thursday after he allegedly sent several emails threatening to shoot up a local school.

The boy, who is enrolled at Franklin Township School District, was charged with third-degree terroristic threats and third-degree causing false public alarm, according to police.

Police said there was never any concrete threat to the safety of the students, who will be back in class for regularly scheduled instruction on Friday.

News of the boy’s arrest was reported by NJ Advance Media.

Two school districts in Gloucester County – the Franklin Township and Delsea Regional schools – closed down on Thursday after a Franklin Township staff member received an email before dawn.

A teacher at Caroline L. Reutter School received an email saying that there would be a shooting there.

Authorities say that they traced the email to a 10-year-old boy after contacting an internet service provider and pinpointing the origins of the message.

The superintendent of the Delsea Regional School District, Piera Gravenor, said police contacted her in the middle of the night on Thursday and informed her of the email.

Although the threat was made to the Franklin Township district, the proximity to Delsea prompted Gravenor to take the precautionary step of shutting the schools.
