Two aircraft – a drone and a reconnaissance plane – were detected flying near the disputed Crimean peninsula on Russia’s coast with the Black Sea.

Crimea was illegally annexed by Putin back in 2014 from neighbouring Ukraine, and has ever since been a flashpoint of conflict between Moscow and NATO.

Meanwhile, two US destroyers are currently sailing in the Black Sea – a move which was branded as “provocative” by Russia.

Relations between the West and Russia are reaching Cold War lows amid accusations of election hacking, the war in Syria, and NATO build-ups in the Baltic.

Putin has previously raged about US spy planes near his borders, with the Kremlin demanding the US stand down.

The US recon plane – an EP-3 Aries – flew over the Black Sea near the Crimean coast on Monday.

And then little over four hours later, one of the US Air Force’s Global Hawk drones came hurtling along the coast of the annexed region

Back-to-back missions also came just days after a two US destroyers also sailed into Black Sea.

Russia has previously slammed US spy planes for flying close to their borders, ordering them back down.

Moscow defence officials demanded Washington cease flying planes near their borders – vowing to defend their airspace.

Russian and US jets flying for NATO regularly come into close contact over the Black Sea.
