Authorities in Michigan have arrested a 17-year-old boy for allegedly threatening to shoot up his high school – but he claims he was just kidding.

Manistee County Sheriff’s office contacted Cullen Shafer on Monday after learning that he has made an alleged verbal threat against Brethren High School.

The tip came from a group of students at the school who notified their principal by email, sparking a police investigation.

Shafer was arraigned on Tuesday on a felony count of threat of terrorism, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, reported Mlive.com.

According to his Facebook page, he went to Brethren High School

Deputies seized an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and his cellphone, reported UpNorthLive.com.

Investigators said the gun belonged to the teenager’s parents.

According to the authorities, the threat was reported on Monday but was made last week, just days after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz stormed into a Parkland, Florida, high school armed with a legally purchased AR-15 and opened fire, killing 17 people and injuring 14 others.
