The first of the 17 people who were killed at a high school massacre in Florida on Wednesday have been named.

Student Jaime Guttenberg is the first teenager to be confirmed dead.

Her family had been hoping she would return home along with her brother who survived, and desperately pleaded for information on social media before learning she had been killed.

Three heroic male teachers who died shielding students from gunman Nikolas Cruz were also killed. They are athletic director Chris Hixon, coach Aaron Feis and geography teacher Scott Beigel.

At least ten students were still unaccounted for on Thursday morning.

The school’s football team tweeted: ‘It is with Great sadness that our Football Family has learned about the death of Aaron Feis.

‘He was our Assistant Football Coach and security guard. He selflessly shielded students from the shooter when he was shot. He died a hero and he will forever be in our hearts and memories.’

Jaime’s cousin Alexa Saka paid tribute to the student, describing her as ‘the most beautiful, kind-hearted, driven, funny and sweet girl,’ according to the New York Daily News.

She added: ‘You went out of your way to make everyone feel good and that smile… that smile lit up every single room you walked into. You hold such a special place in my heart. My sweet baby cousin, may you sleep with the angels tonight and always.’

Twitter user @DiCiccoMethod tweeted: ‘Coaches are always protectors… Some heroes wear Gatorade towels over their shoulders.’

Many tweeted that Feis jumped in front of students during the shooting and took several bullets.

And @ScottWarner18 tweeted: ‘Rather than talk about the coward shooter, meet Aaron Feis, football coach & security guard at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS. He stepped in front of many students to protect them from bullets. He’s currently battling for his life at the hospital. Let’s pray for him. #hero #Parkland.’
