Two US Northrop Grumman E-8 Joint STARS planes have been sent to the Korean Peninsula on a US Air Force mission, military aircraft trackers show.

The £175million ($244million) aircraft were deployed from Kadena Air Base, in Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture, at around 7.32pm local time (10.32am GMT).

Details of the mission were not immediately available, but the state-of-the-art aircraft are designed to gather intelligence on enemy positions prior to an attack.

Flight path projections show the E-8 planes were headed towards north-west South Korea, where Osan Air Base is located – 77 km (48 miles) away from North Korea.

The air base – one of two major US Air Force installations – is located near Songtan Station in the city of Pyeongtaek, South Korea, 64 km (40 miles) south of Seoul.

At a UN conference in Geneva, meanwhile, US official Robert Wood warned that North Korea may be months away from being able to hit the US mainland with nuclear-tipped missiles.

Tensions between North Korea and the US are still simmering, despite agreeing to halt joint military exercises with South Korea during the Winter Olympics.

US military activity remains prevalent in the tinderbox region amid warnings Pyongyang would not “sit idle” if Washington and Seoul resumed war drills.
