The first 6.1 magnitude occurred 62 miles south of the capital Taipei at a depth of just four miles.

The quake struck just 10 miles from Hualien City – with a population of 350,000 – on the east coast.

Witnesses reported long and powerful tremors with buildings trembling.

The United States Geological Survey has warned there could be fatalities and damage.

It said in a statement: “The population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist.

“The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and non ductile concrete frame with infill construction.”

“Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.”

The USGS later reported another quake in the same area, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale.

It occurred at a shallow depth of eight miles, while two others hit earlier at magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.3.
