The US military is reportedly training for a mission that would land them on North Korean soil and remove ‘weapons of mass destruction in case of conflict’.

Photos of a recent exercise, named Warrior Strike IX, show a US military unit known as ‘The Black Jack Brigade’ training alongside their South Korean counterparts at Camp Stanley, in South Korea.

The images, which were shared on the unit’s Facebook page, show soldiers training with night-vision equipment, armored vehicles and full-face protective gear, including gas masks.

Descriptions of the event, which took place on December 15, suggest soldiers practiced for eventualities such as transporting injured comrades and capturing combatants.

Lt Col Christopher B. Logan, a spokesman for the US military in South Korea, told Business Insider that the US military doesn’t ‘discuss specific scenarios’.

However, he added that ‘exercises are vital to the readiness of the US and our allies, and ensure we are ready and trained for combined-joint operations.’

North Korea is infamously secretive about its arsenal, reportedly hiding a number of weapons in mountains and underground tunnels.

If war did break out between North Korea and the US/South Korea, a key task early on would be seizing control of, or destroying, Pyongyang’s weapons of mass destruction.

North Korea has frequently threatened nuclear attacks on South Korea and the US, and demonstrated nuclear devices six times.

Both China and Russia have accused the US of escalating tensions with North Korea by increasing the military drills as well as several comments made to irk leader Kim Jong-un by US President Donald Trump.
