She signed the landmark UK-Poland Treaty on Defence and Security Co-operation during her visit to the Polish capital, Warsaw.

Britain and Poland will both put aside £5 million for the project, which aims to coordinate military training, exercises and information sharing.

The Prime Minister said she was committed to working towards a closer relationship with the eastern European state after Brexit.

The number of British troops stationed in Poland will also be increased under the plan.

At a joint press conference with her Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki, Mrs May said both countries wanted be “strong strategic allies” as the UK prepares to leave the EU.

Mrs May also backed close co-operation to help tackle cyber threats and alleged Russian “fake news” propaganda.

She added: “We are both deeply concerned by Russia’s attempts to undermine the international rules-based system. It will not succeed.”

Mr Morawiecki added: “We all realise how important co-operation in defence is to ensure better security for Europe.”

He also said both countries were “close to reaching a compromise” on the issue of citizens’ rights during Brexit negotations.

He told reporters: “It was important to find an acceptable compromise in this area.”

Mrs May said: “The relationship between Poland and the UK is based on shared history and shared traditions.

“A key priority is me to give assurance to the nearly 1 million Polish citizens living in the UK that we want them to stay.

“EU citizens living in the UK will have their rights protected. They will be able to go on living their lives as they were before.

“Although the UK is leaving the European Union, we are not leaving Europe. We want to work with Poland and the EU’s other member states.”
