US Air Force plane Rivet Joint – a surveillance aircraft – has been detected flying over Europe as it appears to head for the Russian border.

The plane is designed to monitor signals and can also carry out electronic warfare missions.

Russia and the US have an uneasy relationship as they clash over military build-up in eastern Europe, alleged election tampering, and the annexation of Crimea.

UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson described the situation as being as bad as the Cold War.

Putin and Donald Trump have shared two phone calls over the last week amid accusations the US President “colluded” with Moscow.

Rivet Joint planes are based around the world, including one in Britain at RAF Upper Hayford.

The 580mph, 140ft long plane are converted from airborne tankers and filled with state-of-the-art reconnaissance equipment.

It has been claimed the planes can also attack by “frying” enemy communications systems.
