A 5.0 magnitude earthquake has rocked New Zealand after striking off east coast of the country.

The quake was centred 15km south-east of Nelson, at a depth of 74km, according to Geonet.

The tremour was felt up and down the north and south islands from New Plymouth to Wellington and across the Cook Strait as far as Christchurch.

One woman said she thought the quake was ‘quite strong’.

‘Light??! That was not light. Was loud and sharp in Stoke, Nelson,’ she wrote on Facebook.

Over New Plymouth, one woman said her family’s Christmas ornaments on the tree started swaying, but they didn’t actually feel the quake.

One person felt the strength citing: ‘It felt like a good jolt here in Richmond’.

‘Strong jolt in Blenheim. Heard it coming too. Top floor of hotel. Moved like a snake,’ said one man.

Geonet initially reported the quake had a magnitue of 4.8 but has since upgraded it to a 5.0.
