Russia is preparing for conflict in its far-eastern regions amid soaring military tensions between the US and North Korea.

Thousands of US troops and hundreds of fighter jets have been sent to South Korea to take part in joint military drills, codenamed Vigilant Ace.

In response, the Russian army is holding military drills of its own in the far-eastern regions of Kamchatka and Primorye, which share a border with North Korea.

Around 1,000 naval infantry from Russia’s Pacific Ocean Fleet will master land warfare vehicles as part of the drill, the Russian Defence Ministry said.

Russian marines sent to two training ranges in Primorye and have already begun practicing ground combat with handheld arms, the ministry said.

One of these ranges, Bamburovo, is around 110kms from the North Korean border.

In the coming days, troops in Kamchatka will practice driving armoured personnel carriers.

The drills come as the US and South Korea prepare for all-out conflict with North Korea by holding unprecedented military exercises.

North Korea angered the US by firing another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) – a Hwasong-15, its most powerful yet.

US President Donald Trump vowed to “take care of it” while North Korea leader Kim Jong-un declared his nation a “nuclear force”.

Putin and Kremlin officials have called on the US and North Korea to find a diplomatic solution to resolve the increasingly tense military stand-off.
