Ri Yong Ho has jetted in to the Caribbean island to meet Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez for key talks amid Pyongyang’s stand off with Washington.

The communist state has left global the globe on the brink of war this year after a string of provocative nuclear tests.

But Cuba – who eyeballed the US in an astonishing 13-day stand off that came close to sending the Cold War into nuclear destruction – has remained a close tie to the Hermit Kingdom since the 1960s.

It is not yet clear why Yong Ho has jetted in, but speculation hints that it is an attempt to threaten North Korea’s arch rival in a signal of intent.

Since taking office last year, Trump has retained a hostile dialogue with Cuba and it is thought the visit will serve as an act of defiance in retaliation.

The island lies just 90 minutes from the US mainland, which North Korea has threatened to bomb with nuclear weapons.

However, some say Cuba is the only country who can get through to the mad Hermit Kingdom and believe it is the only nation that could calm the state down.

An Asian diplomat said: “We often ask the Cubans if they can talk to them.”

Both are communist-run countries and Cuba maintains an embassy in North Korea, but still trades publicly with bitter enemy South Korea.
