Admiral Harry Harris, head of the US Pacific Command, made the stark comments to Japan’s Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera.

The two countries recently conducted a series of military drills to the fury of tubby tyrant Kim Jong-un.

It comes after a series of missile tests in the hermit kingdom – including two that flew over Japan.

Harris said: “Clearly, while diplomacy must be the main effort with North Korea, it has to be diplomacy backed by credible military power.”

Onodera said that recent military exercises involving Japanese troops and three US aircraft carriers had sent “a very strong message” to North Korea.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe added that Japan wants to work closely with the US to boost deterrence and response capability to any threats from North Korea.

Last week, the country sent its largest warships to join US aircraft carriers close to North Korea.

Japanese vessels Ise, Inazuma and Makinami sailed with the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea.

The US has previously called on its allies to do more to tackle the North Korea threat.

President Donald Trump yesterday said “urgent action” needs to be taken to prevent war breaking out.

The Donald bragged he had convinced China – one of North Korea’s only allies – to step up their sanctions on Pyongyang.
