DISNEYLAND have shut down two cooling towers after nine visitors contracted Legionnaires’ disease.

American authorities are investigating 12 cases of the bacterial lung infection that affected people living in or visiting Anaheim, California.

The ages of the patients range from 52 to 94 and nine of them visited Disneyland in September.

One of the patients is understood to be an employee of the the resort, reported the Los Angeles Times.

The towers are located near the New Orleans Square Train Station in the theme park.

One individual, who did not visit the park, died from the disease although they were already suffering from other health issues.

Ten of the 12 patients required treatment in hospital but there have been no new cases of the disease linked to the Californian city since September.

Legionnaires’ disease is a bacterial lung infection caused by exposure to contaminated water or mist.

Dr Pamela Hymel, chief medical officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said in a statement: “On Oct. 27, we learned from the Orange County Health Care Agency of increased Legionnaires’ disease cases in Anaheim.

“We conducted a review and learned that two cooling towers had elevated levels of Legionella bacteria. These towers were treated with chemicals that destroy the bacteria and are currently shut down.”
