Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said European roads, bridges and rail networks should be ready to carry tanks and heavy military weaponry for attack at any time.
This is the first time NATO is updating its command structure since the Cold War, and is thought to be a response to Russia President Vladimir Putin’s recent “war games” in Belarus.
Britain will boost its commitment to European security by sending four RAF Typhoon jets to Romania next summer, the new Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson announced.
The fast jets will be redeployed to the country working with the UK’s Romanian allies to police the Black Sea skies.
In Brussels today, Stoltenberg said NATO needs a command structure to ensure “we have the right forces, in the right place, with the right equipment at the right time”.
He added: “This is not only about commands. We also need to ensure that roads and bridges are strong enough to take our largest vehicles, and that rail networks are equipped for the rapid deployment of tanks and heavy equipment.
“NATO has military requirements for civilian infrastructure and we need to update these to ensure that current military needs are taken into account.”
Brit Defence Secretary Williamson added that the UK is preparing to increasing its presence in eastern Europe.
The Ministry of Defence said that from 2018 a battalion will be held at “high readiness to respond to any situation in the region”.
It will see 600 UK soldiers ready to go into the region at short notice.
