Missiles chiefs will be put through their paces as part of the worldwide annual exercise which began today.

US Strategic Command (StratCom) has described the secretive drill as preparing their forces for “wherever they are needed”.

Details released by the Pentagon have been sparse, but it understood to involve missiles and bombers.

Global Thunder’s mission statement is to ready the US’s nuclear command centre for war.

Worldwide tensions have reached new highs as the US stares down North Korea while Russia and China watch on.

US forces are expected to deploy missiles and nuclear-capable warplanes throughout the drill.

Sparse details have been released as to what exactly they will be doing, but first strike and missile defence is expected to top the bill.

During last year’s drill, B-52 Stratofortesses and B-2 bombers carried out strike missions.

US Air Force General John Hyten said: “These exercises achieve the vision of a unified team, integrating all the capabilities of U.S. Strategic Command across the globe wherever and whenever needed.

“We need to integrate our strategic capabilities in order to deliver multi-domain effects against any adversary, anywhere in the world, at any time.”

Daily Star Online revealed the US is expected to live-fire missiles in the Pacific this week from the Marshall Islands.
