MEP Eugen Freund admitted that he was “not surprised” at Austria shock election results due to the populist wave sweeping across Europe.

Austria faced an unexpected election result after right-wing party FPO grabbed 26 per cent of the vote in its parliamentary election on October 15.

Speaking to France 24, the Socialists and Democrats MEP said: “The EU did not impose sanctions on Austria. Not even very light sanctions, it was a few countries within the EU which imposed sanctions but not the EU as a body itself.”

The EU briefly imposed sanctions on the FPO when it last entered government in 2000. The sanctions were in place with the aim of forcing the far-right group out of governance.

Mr Freund said: “Well, it is different because in some circumstances because most of Europe has moved to the right.

“So the fact that now Austria is also in this category of moving to the right does not really surprise us. I mean, it disappoints us, of course, but it does not surprise us as much.”

Former European Parliament President Martin Schultz warned at the start of the year that a rise in populism in Europe is a “virus” that could spell the end for the EU.

Austrian Peoples Party (OeVP) won with an underwhelming victory of 31.5 per cent and, as a result, party leader Sebastian Kurtz announced plans to form a coalition with the far-right Freedom Party (FPO).
