Security minister Ben Wallace has shocking revealed the government believes a North Korean hacking group was behind the so-called “WannaCry” attack.

Cyber warriors hit computer systems worldwide as they infected more than 300,000 computers across 150 countries with the ransomeware.

Government agencies and global companies were stricken but the attack that locked users out of their machines and demanded ransom paid in cryptocurrency in Bitcoin.

NHS systems in Britain were the worst impacted as more than 20,000 appointments – including cancer treatments – were cancelled.

Ambulances were forced to divert from hospitals, and the health service was nearly brought to its knees.

“This attack, we believe quite strongly that this came from a foreign state,” Mr Wallace said.

He added “we can be as sure as possible” that the foreign state in question was North Korea.

Mr Wallace’s revelations came amid fears of war between Kim Jong-un and the US as nation refuses to give-up its quests of nuclear ICBMs.

Mr Wallace said on BBC’s Today programme: “I obviously can’t go into the detail of intelligence, but it is widely believed in the community and across a number of countries that North Korea had taken this role.”

He stopped short of suggesting the UK could carry out revenge attacks – admitting it is “challenging” to take on a “hostile state”.

The minister claimed the UK had the ability to fight back, but didn’t want to get into a “tit for tat” with the hackers.
