Nearly 54 years on from President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, tens of thousands of documents are set to shed more light on what happened in Dallas that day, with President Trump excited…

As Statista’s Niall McCarthy notes, conspiracy theories about the assassination continue to circulate and few events in modern history have been enshrouded the public in so much doubt.

The official version is that Lee Harvey Oswald killed the president with a high-powered rifle from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository.

Many people have unofficial theories of their own, ranging from a second shooter on the grassy knoll to the CIA and Fidel Castro’s involvement.

In fact, 61 percent of Americans believe JFK was not killed by Oswald alone and that others were involved, according to a survey carried out by website FiveThirtyEight. Only 33 percent of people think Oswald acted alone. Even though today’s document release is going to be extensive, it is widely expected that it won’t put the conspiracy theories to rest.

Here, via RT, we take a look at what different people say happened on that tragic day…

Lone wolf – the official version
Following the tragic event, the Warren Commission was set up by President Lyndon B. Johnson to shed light on Kennedy’s murder. In 1964, the commission concluded that Kennedy was killed by a lone assassin – former US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald.

The shooter fired three shots from a sixth-floor window in the Texas School Book Depository and two bullets reached his target – President Kennedy – and wounded Texas Governor John Connally, who was travelling in the car with Kennedy.

Although the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald was not part of any conspiracy, the findings were criticized for allegedly ignoring some witness accounts and for the fact that the CIA and FBI, who assisted the investigation, withheld some information.

A second shooter?
