NORTH Korea could be used as a decoy for enemies plotting an attack on the US which could spark World War 3, a cyber security expert has claimed.

Russia and China could cloak themselves with “traces” of North Korean technology and digital clues to throw the US investigators off the scent, according to Matt Morris.

The vice president of NexDefense told Express.co.uk intelligent hackers knew the calling cards and digital footprints of other states and were mimicking them in order to avoid detection.

He said the GPS systems of US Navy ships in East Asia have been hacked several times this year, sending ships careering off track resulting in deadly collisions.

And sophisticated agents from China and Russia knew the calling cards and digital footprints of North Korea and were mimicking them in order to avoid detection.

He said: “The interesting thing about both of them is hackers are really smart. They know what the signatures are of other country. If I’m China I’m going to attack somebody like Russia, or like North Korea.

“They’ll leave behind traces of other countries that makes it look like someone else. They are very, very good at what they do.”

Due to North Korea’s limited connectivity and skills, Pyongyang is forced to go through its Russian and Chinese neighbours’ systems in order to carry out its own cyber attacks.

This makes it incredibly difficult to determine who exactly was responsible for hacking attacks because all three states could pose as the other.

North Korea’s hackers were only a limited threat to international cyber security. The real danger, he said, was America’s rivals in Beijing and Moscow.
