Matt Morris, vice president of NexDefence, said hackers from North Korea, China and Russia could manipulate GPS systems and send warships on a collision course with other vessels.

But in the confusion the dark web fanatics might turn their sights to anti-missile-equipped ships – turning them towards the US and its allies.

He warned some examples of the phenomenon may already have been witnessed.

Mr Morris told Express.co.uk: “These ships depend pretty heavily on GPS. The GPS was essentially telling them they were on course when in fact they were in a completely different location.

“This is what caused them to crash into another ship. There have been two of them both, both in the same fleet.”

He added: “There is a GPS side of it which is almost like ‘let’s have some fun with these guys and make them run into something’.”

The brainiac warned the real danger is out-dated operating systems that could be easily compromised.

He said: “A lot of times these systems are very dated. The defensive systems and other positioning systems run on Windows NT and XP and things that are very old. Those things are ripe, full of vulnerability.
