The US state held its biggest ever “Great Shake Out” drill amid warnings of an “inevitable” magnitude 7 earthquake within the next 30 years.

Scientists and emergency officials lead one minute of “drop, cover and hold” drills in schools colleges, businesses and community groups across the state.

As Californians practiced the drills, dozens of earthquakes struck the region throughout the day.

The US cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento were all rattled by earthquakes 1.5 magnitude or greater.

The largest quake measured 3.5 magnitude and struck around 11.45 local time at a depth of 7km near Greenfield, around 192km from San Francisco.

Thirteen of the tremors were over 2.0 magnitude, while the rest were between 1.0 to 2.0 magnitude, according to Earthquake Track.

Although relatively small, the wave of earthquakes will entrench fears that a massive tremor measuring 7.0 or above could strike the region.

Scientists believe the US state is overdue a “big one” magnitude 7 or over earthquake by decades.
