Air Force Lt. General Dan “Fig” Leaf, now retired, said the Pentagon needs to step up its defences to send a message to Kim Jong-un.
The hero, who lives in Honolulu, warned Donald Trump needs to put North Korea “on notice” and show the US “is not going to sit idly”.
He predicted the deployment of missile defence batteries to the Pacific islands would be a a major victory over Kim.
It was previously revealed Hawaii believes there is a direct threat from North Korea.
Tensions continue to rise as Trump and Kim engage in a fierce war of words over the rogue state’s mission of nuclear-capable ICBMs.
General Leaf said: “The president cannot allow North Korea to get comfortable with the notion that they have the initiative on all fronts.
“Improving Hawaii’s defences complicates the North Korean attack calculations and puts Kim Jong Un on notice that the US is not going to sit idly by under their threats, nor will it limit its actions to negotiation or military operations on the Korean Peninsula.”
US missile defences could be deployed in Hawaii as earlier as January, reports Stars and Stripes.
