John Oliver has hit out at the Academy after it expelled Harvey Weinstein – while still counting Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby and Casey Affleck as members.
The Last Week Tonight host also attacked ‘the way that people around him excused’ his alleged sexual harassment of dozens of women.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science expelled Weinstein on Saturday with a statement explaining the ‘era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over’.
But Oliver was not impressed.
He joked: ‘Yes, finally! The group that counts among its current members Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby and Mel Gibson has found the one guy who treated women badly and kicked him out.
‘So congratulations, Hollywood! See you at the next Oscars where – and this is true – Casey Affleck will be presenting Best Actress.’
Oliver began his skit by playing a clip showing the actress Angie Everhart, who claimed that Weinstein came into her cabin on a yacht while she was sleeping and proceeded to masturbate.
