Senior Russian officials will hold meetings with their counterparts from Pyongyang, as well as South Korean representatives.

Valentina Matviyenko, speaker of Russia’s Senate upper house, will lead the crunch talks in St Petersburg on Monday.

It comes as tensions between the United States and North Korea continue to mount.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un have made increasingly terrifying threats towards each other in recent weeks.

They include the US President’s threat to “totally destroy” Kim’s regime in a shocking speech at the UN last month.

Trump didn’t mince words when he said the US had no choice but to effectively go to war with North Korea.

He said: “We will have no choice than to totally destroy North Korea. Rocketman is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime.

“We are calling for a great reawakening of the nation.

“We need to defeat the enemies of humanity and unlock the potential of life itself.”

North Korea has responded in kind, with state propaganda repeatedly threatening to strike the US mainland with nuclear missiles.

But it is hoped Russian President Vladimir Putin’s involvement could prevent WW3 from kicking off.

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Senate’s international relations committee, said: “I believe that during the meetings the Russian side will call (on North and South Korea) to hold direct contacts. This would be quite natural, but of course, we cannot, and should not, force anyone to do so.”
