The earthquake measuring 5.4-magnitude on the Richter scale hit the southern coast of Mexico, just 4.8 miles from San Dionisio del Mar.

It was measured at a depth of 59.5km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) and comes just weeks after Mexico was struck by a powerful 8.1-magnitude quake that left at least 337 people dead.

It is not clear if the tremor was an aftershock from a powerful series of quakes last month that caused buildings to crumble in Mexico City.

The epicentre of Friday’s tremor was just off the coast of Oaxaca state, in Mexico’s southwest.

An 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck Oaxaca on September 7 near the town of Juchitan, which flattened thousands of buildings in the market town.

Fausto Lugo, Mexico City’s emergency services chief, said on local television that the most recent earthquake was felt lightly in the capital.
