A near majority of Republicans now supports stricter gun control measures following the Las Vegas shootings where 58 people died under withering near-automatic fire while attending a country music concert.

Forty-nine per cent of Republican voters now back stricter gun controls in the U.S., following days of reports about the horrific shootings that injured hundreds, according to a new Morning Consult / Politico poll.

That is an increase in 5 per cent following another highly publicized shooting incident – the attack on lawmakers who were practicing for the annual congressional baseball game.

That attack led to severe injuries to Rep. Steve Scalise, the Republican majority whip.

A year before that, in June 2016, Republican support for stricter gun control was just 37 per cent.

Among voters overall, 64 per cent backed stricter gun control laws, compared to 61 per cent in June.

Even a majority of those in gun-owning households backed new regulations, by a vote of 54 per cent.

On the issue of ‘bump stocks,’ which can be used to create near-automatic speeds of fire and which were found in the shooter’s hotel room, an overwhelming 79 per cent of voters support a ban, Politico reported.
