Iran has vowed to take “reciprocal measures” against the US should its army, the Revolutionary Guards, be branded a terrorist organisation.

Ali Akbar Velayati, a top Iranian offical, appeared to suggest military options were being considered.

“Whatever they do we will take reciprocal measures. All options are on the table,” he said.

Velayati, a senior aide to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, went on to accuse the US of supporting ISIS terrorists.

His comments come just 24 hours after Iran threatened the US with a “firm, decisive and crushing” response to sanctions.

US President Trump is considering tougher sanctions against Iran, including listing the Revolutionary Guards as a terror group.

Trump is set to annouce his final decision on sanctions against the Islamic republic next week.

But on Monday Bahram Qasemi, a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry, hit back, saying he was hopeful the US would not make such a “strategic mistake”.

“If they do, Iran’s reaction would be firm, decisive and crushing and the United States should bear all its consequences,” he told reporters.
