General James Mattis warned it is impossible to tell what the future holds for the crisis, but urged his forces to be prepared for a military confrontation with Kim Jong-un.
He said while Trump is committed to finding a diplomatic solution, he added the US Army must “stand ready”.
The secretary of defence was addressing servicemen at event AUSA 2017 conference in Washington.
His warning comes amid fears North Korea are preparing to detonate a nuclear bomb or launch a missile on October 10.
Mattis said: “It is right now a diplomatically led, economic-sanction buttressed effort to try to turn North Korea off this path.
“Now what does the future hold? Neither you nor I can say, so there is one thing the US Army can do.
“And that is you have got to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our President can employ if needed.”
War fears have been easing as North Korea has not carried out any public tests for their nuclear weapons programme since September 15.
However, Trump has been tweeting about the crisis in recent days – suggesting there is only “one option” to deal with North Korea.
The US President said: “Presidents and their administrations have been talking to North Korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts of money paid hasn’t worked, agreements violated before the ink was dry, makings fools of US negotiators.”
