Hooded protestors throw firecrackers and smoke canisters at the police after they failed to break through a cordon this afternoon.

The group had attempted to storm past police to the Group of Seven meeting, where labour right and employment is on the agenda.

The demonstrators were protesting against low-paid jobs and short-term contracts when they attempted to breach the Reggia di Venaria residence, the venue for today’s meeting.

In disturbing scenes, protestors even placed a mock guillotine in the centre of Venaria and ‘executed’ effigies of former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi and current Italian Labor Minister Giuliano Poletti.

The meeting began yesterday with violence erupting in the evening and continuing overnight.

Hundreds of people have taken to the street this weekend to hold a series of rallies and demonstrations.

Last night protestors lit flares, overturned bins, threw eggs at police and burned smoke canisters.

Others blocked entry to a branch of the Carrefour chain supermarket in an anti-capitalist demonstration.
