Anthony Weiner gasped and broke down as he was sentenced to 21 months for sending sexually explicit material to minor on Monday at New York federal court.
The sobbing former congressman covered his face with his hands and gripped the desk for support as Judge Denise Cote imposed a custodial sentence followed by three years of supervised release.
The 53-year-old must surrender to a designated prison facility, which has not yet been determined, on November 6 by 2pm.
The distraught man was still wearing his wedding band after he was seen heading to court from the apartment he shares with wife Huma Abedin, who is divorcing him. His brother, mother and father sat behind him in court but Huma was not present.
Weiner’s sexting relationship with the underage girl, where he asked her to strip naked and touch herself for him on Skype and Snapchat, was first revealed by DailyMail.com last September and immediately prompted a federal investigation.
The case led the FBI to reopen its probe into Hillary Clinton’s private email server after investigators found messages between Clinton and Weiner’s wife on the former congressman’s laptop.
